Draft autograph letter signed to Simon Newcomb

Proper comparison of Hansen's and Delaunay's equations of Longitude, Latitude and Parallax [of the moon] much needed. Description of such comparisons as already exist. JCA's own parallax tables. Tables of Moon's Ephemeris might be obtained from Hind: JCA will enquire. Hill's computation of the perturbations of Jupiter and Saturn very worthy.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to W.H.M. Christie

Knobel's Table of comparisons of Greenwich Observations and Hansen's tables. Letter or extract of letter transcribed for quotation in MacAlister's biography. Possible that this particular item is JCA's own file copy.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

In French. Seeks opinion of Memoire sur les Satellites de Jupiter. Sends two papers from Memories de l'Academie de Belgique on the movement of stars in the solar system. Furthering work on Hansen on the relative movement of three bodies. Satellites of Jupiter has been awarded a Damoiseau prize by the Academie des Sciences.

Souillart, C (fl 1878-1893)

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Airy received letter from De La Rue with JCA's comments on Hansen's investigation of Secular Acceleration of Moon's Mean Motion. Discusses error of Hansen's.

Stone, Edward James (1831-1897) astronomer

Copy of letter to W. Whewell

In JCA's hand. Sends two equations from Hansen to explain the inequality of the moon's motion [missing]. Requests that JCA may be allowed to see the letter.

Airy, Sir George Biddell (1801-1892) Knight, astronomer

Autograph letter signed to A. Cayley

Acknowledgement of paper on Hansen's theory. AC's treatment of Lunar theory by method of variation of elements is new; outlines the possible difficulties. JCA is applying this method to the secular inequalities of the moon's mean motion, further to paper in PTRS, 1853.

Adams, John Couch (1819-1892) astronomer

Copy of letter to W. De La Rue

[JCA's comments on De La Rue's speech on awarding Gold Medal of RAS] Acknowledges copy of Hansen's letter sent. Disagrees with H's assertion that he never contested JCA's theory of the secular acceleration of the moon: H caused LeVerrier to attack JCA and Delaunay, and is now adapting his own theory without admitting it might be wrong.
