Wooden chair with cane seat, upholstered arms and casters on feet. A brass plaque mounted on the seat front reads 'Samuel Butler's Chair 1835-1902. Gift of Jonathan Cape Limited 1967.'

Wooden cabinet, measuring 24 x 21 x 12 cms, with six drawers (two concealed behind a panel). This is the larger of two Japanese cabinets in the collection; the smaller is XI/5/1. [The cabinets are referred to in a letter from Miss Savage to Butler dated 18 April 1882, indicating that Butler had acquired them before that date. See note in Henry Festing Jones's catalogue, pp.54-55.]

One plate, 22 cm diameter, depicting a cow stood beneath a tree ["Three Acres and a Cow"; see note in Henry Festing Jones's 1921 catalogue, p.56]. Two brown glazed dishes, from Germany or Switzerland: one, 27.5 cm diameter, with a light pattern of lines and dots; one, 29.5 cm diameter, with a heavy floral-pattern border. Stored in a conservation box.

Pair of chamois horns on an oval wood mount, 16 cm high, given to Samuel Butler by Dionigi Negri. Inscription on mount reads: 'Samuel Butler dall'amico suo Dionigi Negri Varallo Sesia 1889.' Stored in a conservation box.
