Diaries

Two small lined notebooks, closely written in pencil with detailed entries for each day from the point of MMLP's departure up to his return. The diaries give detailed description of daily life, travel, wildlife and environment, the group's activities and weather conditions. A short 'epilogue or anticlimax' covers his return journey across the UK following the end of the expedition.

Material relating to a lecture on Swift given by Prof. W. Johnson, and its subsequent publication

The lecture, entitled 'The centennial year of Herbert Walker Swift, 1894-1960, Professor of Engineering in the University of Sheffield: his life and work', was delivered by Prof. Johnson at the University of Sheffield on 6 Dec. 1995. It was subsequently published in the Journal of Materials Processing Technology 65 (1997), 153-164.

Early life, school, and home

Covers the period that WHW attended the Lavender Hill Board School and Ipswich Grammar School. Includes school reports and certificates, newspaper accounts of school speech day 1907 and King Edward VII's proclamation from Ipswich Town Hall in 1901, school magazines, letters from WHW to his mother whilst on a trip to Cambridge in 1902, manuscript juvenile magazines written by WHW, a handwritten programme for a school dramatic entertainment, an issue of the Lady's Gazette from 1904, a music manuscript book given to WHW by his father in 1895, congratulatory postcards to WHW following success at school, and one photograph of WHW as a schoolboy.
