English Observations to be omitted from next Monthly Notices of RAS on account of space. Report of [CO] Syndicate would benefit from additions. Encouraging Hartnup in meridian observations, especially planets and comets. Would like to see JCA in a University post; suggests Lowndean Professorship. Will be ready to print [on Neptune] in mid September: requires JC to provide observations.

RS vexed that JCA has not been appointed to the Nautical Almanac. The system of appointment is imperfect, and Sir J. G. should not have appointed anyone without taking advice. Hopes that Cambridge may invite JCA to lecture on physical astronomy.

Sends, in confidence, the minutes of the Royal Society passed the previous day. Regrets that JCA was not at the meeting. It concerned the setting up of a museum in Kensington: idea headed by Prince Albert. The Royal Society more interested in a site at Charing Cross. Volume on the solar eclipse in the press. Future arranagements for the Monthly Notices of the RAS, including fee to be paid to Grant for editing it.
