Is to publish an Ephemeris of Neptune received from Encke. Has requested Lassell to make and forward observations of satellites of Neptune and Uranus, and Hartnup [Liverpool Observatory] to send good observations of Neptune. Both are also working on the diameter of Venus. JCA requested to thank Hartnup in particular as he is under appreciated by Liverpool Town Council. Emphasises the good effect a word from JCA might have in such circumstances.

Request for more material for publication. Lassell's progress with satellite of Neptune. Check that Herschel has not done similar work. Report of Oxford meeting (of British Association).

Peirce's perturbations of Neptune: appear sufficient only for Monthly Notices of RAS. Computation of Neptune might be speeded by help from Nautical Almanac Office for routine calculation. Requests news as to progress with theory. The state of national politics.

Controversy with Peirce: wishes to avoid it becoming personal. Encloses issue of Monthly Notices of RAS, for correction regarding accurate longitude of planet in 1810. Suggests best technique to avoid controversy to write without reference to opponents, aimed at more general audience.

RAS use of abstracts of papers in the Memoirs: would like JCA to produce good ones to reduce the length and expense of printing. Suggests JCA write answer to RS's note on Neptune.

Still waiting for abstract of Breen's paper. On the slow nature of Johnians: JCA and Herschel. Cannot imagine how Lord Palmerston can be so sharp.

Requests note on Neptune for Memoirs of RAS. Writes to JCA at Birmingham [British Association Meeting]. RS to travel abroad to meet Schumacher to discuss standard weights and measures in Germany.
