Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Does not have any copies of paper on Newton to hand, but will send one if he finds one [JJS. "On an elementary proof & generalisation of Sir Isaac Newton's hitherto undemonstrated rule for the discovery of imaginary roots". Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Vol. 1 no.2, 1865.]

Sylvester, James Joseph (1814-1897) mathematician

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

(Signal Office, Washington) Encloses a book on scientific instruments. Sees need for new edition of Newton's works. Interested in John Francis Vigani.

Abbe, Cleveland (1838-1916) meteorologist

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Trying to discover what changes were made to the 2nd edition of the Principia from Pemberton's suggestions, in his letters among the Portsmouth Papers. Believes JCA may be able to help, and may have found a formula for the motion of the Moon's apogee. See draft of letter from Newton to Cotes (Box 19/1), which was found with this letter.

Brewster, Sir David (1781-1868) Knight, natural philosopher and academic administrator

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Will use the "very interesting letter" J.C.A. has sent in the appendix to the 2nd vol. of the Life of Newton.

Would J.C.A. accept the Mathematical Chair at St. Andrews if offered.

Brewster, Sir David (1781-1868) Knight, natural philosopher and academic administrator

Autograph letter signed to J.C. Adams

Cannot find passage mentioning apogee in Pemberton's letters. Encloses only piece of MS mentioning the apogee. [Probably not the draft letter from Newton to Cotes found in J.C.A.'s papers as this is with an envelope date 21 May 1855]. Further information about mathematical chair at St. Andrews.
