2 ALS to Lyn Newman

Encloses her first letter which is no longer valid after her talk with the Chairman of the Yale Faculty Committee. Believes that the British mothers' situation in America is one that calls for action but does not want to ask the mothers in her group to sign a petition for something they know very little about. Requests a meeting with Lyn. Cancelled letter contains the names of Erica Bowen, Evelyn Phelps-Brown, Barbara Falk, Daphne Levens, Norah Myres, Enid Henn and Ruth Duthie.

Henn, Enid (fl 1941)

2 copies of typed letter with autograph additions to Bishop Mervyn Stockwood

Forwards a letter from Sally Higginbottom who was baptised by Bill Leah, Chaplain at King's College, with Lyn, and John Saltmarsh for 'godparents'. Claims that Mervyn Stockwood started the process of Sally's conversion. Adds her thoughts about Nicolas Stacey's article. Gives her sister Elsa as an example of a spiritual person who does not like to attend church.

Newman, Lyn (1901-1973) author and journalist

"A friend writes"

Photocopy of typed obituary of Lyn Irvine by Nancy Blackburn.

Blackburn, Nancy (fl 1963-1978)

ALS and autograph card to Lyn Newman

Postcard depicting Emily Post Doorway, Edgartown, Mass. giving her permanent home address and mentioning St Simon's. Letter informs of the death of her sister, who originally got her cousin interested in collecting Fanny Kemble related material, and illustrated the Georgia Journal for her cousin and Mr Wister but could not get it published. Enclosed is a press cutting advertising Margaret Armstrong's 'Fanny Kemble'.

Watson, Edith S (fl 1938)

ALS from Lydia Keynes on Mayflower, Washington DC airmail paper, addressed to Lyn at 270 Mercer Street, Princeton, New Jersey.

Very busy and out of her wits with the heat. Maynard works even at mealtimes. Cambridge has had a few bombs here and there. People are kind there, but they don't have the peace of mind that they have when together on the island. She runs away to Tilton to recoup after the blitz is bad in London. Adds a PS saying she is shocked to hear about Virginia's death. No one could have done more than Leonard.

Keynes, Lydia Lopokova (1892-1980) wife of Baron Keynes, ballet dancer and actress

ALS to Alice Butler

Covers the photographs of Fanny Kemble, and Margaret Armstrong's life of Fanny Kemble. Informs Alice that the Sartoris family and Mrs MacIntosh believed that Miss Hall was Pierce Butler's mistress, and Mr Schott named him as the co-respondent when divorcing his wife.

Newman, Lyn (1901-1973) author and journalist

ALS to Betty Chadwick

Reports that Mrs Langdon Marvin is ill and so Mrs A. H. Tandy is head of the British Mothers Club. Thinks it unlikely that any of the mothers at the club will sign Lyn's cable because they signed a document agreeing not to ask for money from England, and further many of them are wives of men in America on government business. Gives Mrs Tandy's reasons for not raising the matter at the Club, in particular that Lyn Newman is not a member.

Simpson, Helen (fl 1941)

ALS to "Cousin Aphra"

Sends her cutting from the agony column of the Irish Times. Asks her to pass it on to Dorothy. Mentions Wicks' family, Anne and Maude. Reports that his daughter is working in the Godolphin School in Salisbury, his son Oliver is working in a chemical lab, and his younger daughter Hazel is still at school. Refers to the death of Helen Morony. Mentions Kate Taylor.

Lloyd, Bob (fl 1947)

ALS to David [Cairns]

Thanks him for his kind letter to Jean and himself about Fiona. Enthuses about 'Alison Cairns', which impacted upon him along with Teilhard's 'Le Milieu Divin', and Hugh Griffith's 'Desert Island Disc', the hymn at the heart of Bach's 'St Matthew Passion'.
