Has been expecting Hiller on leave. Will send any books Hiller wants. Lists Berkhamsted pupils who have been killed. Hopes Hiller 'may come through unscathed'. Complains about those at home not doing their bit. Asks how Hiller's knowledge of German is serving him. Does not like 'the flying idea'.

Is going into trenches tonight. Didn't see Fawcett's death in papers. Lost lot of men at Ypres. Canadians sworn never to take prisoners as Germans crucified Canadian on barn door with bayonets. Have pads to cover faces against German gas.

Sorry for not writing. Has had chill. Thanks for parcels. Has sent time fuse from German shell home for father's birthday. Could they send pyjamas, knee pants and vests? Is in town where bombs been dropped to blow up gas works. Has written to Alison to thank her for chocolate. Life in billets very monotonous.

Is surprised they have not received letters or postcards. Has rejoined the Queen's. Is back in billets where it quiet. Fighting has been terrific. Some terrible sights around captured German trenches. Lots of officers killed and most of men wounded. Germans had plenty of food in trenches. Stench in German trenches appalling. Rains washed out graves. Found ammunition with bullets reversed. Germans well clothed and equipped. Glad to be away from pounding of guns.

Attack on Aubers and Fromelles failed completely. Describes the attack. Disgusted with lies in English papers. Was hit on head and knee but no damage done. Can't send anything for publication as would probably be court-martialed.
