TLS from S. Rukalski, University of the West Indies, Barbados.

Sends Crook best wishes for the new year. He is pleased he moved to Barbados. He found his previous home, where he worked as a white teacher in a negro school, no fun: He states 'you are just unwanted and belong nowhere.' He notes that he has written three novels and a collection of short stories (in French) and asks Crook if he will help him to find a publisher. He attaches a short story (3 pages.)

He apologises to Crook for the inconvenience of asking him to look at his manuscript, never intending that it should be a thorough examination. He understands that Crook has little time, but asks that when a suitable 'window of opportunity' appears, he might take a look at it.

Note to Crook informing him that Prof. Lewittter advises trying potential publishers in the U.S.A. since publication in the UK would be nearly impossible. He is still hoping for an evaluation for his manuscript, ('Guy de Maupassant and Anton Chekhov. A Study in Similarities and Differences') from this professor. He attaches a copy of the synopsis he has been sending to potential publishers (1 page).

Note to Crook expressing his anger at the rejection of his manuscript (by an un-named institution). He mentions that he has sent it to Cambridge University Press in New York and he asks Crook for any assistance that might help towards its publication.

TLS from Ruth Nicholls, University of New England, Armidale

Updates Crook on her family and her life as lecturer in 'methods of teaching languages'. She mentions that Jim has taken early retirement from UNE. She recounts a recent trip to China and her experiences in schools there. She was 'everywhere struck by the similarities and contrasts between Australia and China.' A post script by Jim Nicholl wonders if St John's College or the Cambridge University Library would like to receive any of his father's library., which he has just started to catalogue in a 'very amateurish way'.

TLS from Ronan Trounson (St Chad's College, Durham) to Crook

Thanks him for an anecdote, discussing the origin in a book bought in Cambridge market. Asks for other anecdotes about 'Mayor' (Professor J.E.B. Mayor, Latin 1872 - 1910). Included is a photocopy of a letter about professor Mayor from Trouson and an annoucement of the sale of professor Mayor's library and furniture.
