Volume 3 of the autograph manuscript of 'Alps and Sanctuaries' by Samuel Butler, subsequently bound in three hardcover volumes. Inserted at the end are additional loose sheets of manuscript notes by Butler, entitled 'More Italian notes for a possible second Alps & Sanctuaries'. Also included in the volume: a list of illustrations, with pagination, in the hand of Henry Festing Jones; examples of printed title pages for the published work; tracings of the covers and spine of the published volumes; a copy of the publisher's prospectus for the work; autograph manuscript draft of R.A. Streatfeild's 'Introduction to the new (third) edition', dated April 1913; typescript, with MS additions by Henry Festing Jones, of chapter XXVI ('Fusio Revisited'); typescript, with MS additions by R.A. Streatfeild, of the last few pages of chapter X ('S. Ambrogio and Neighbourhood'), beginning at 'Among our fellow-guests during this visit was a fiery-faced eructive butcher from Turin'.
