Autograph letter signed (on letterhead), Derek [Welsby] to John Alexander.

Thanks him for his letter concerning directorship of Qasr Ibrim excavations; pleased to discuss further. Had intended to visit him soon; working through his Soba wares, badly needs dating evidence, has difficulty recognising wares from Bill Adams's verbal descriptions in new book; wishes to compare his with whatever material Alexander has from Qasr Ibrim or other sites in Northern Nubia and with him and/or Pam Rose, with their familiarity with Bill Adams's methodology.

Autograph letter signed (on letterhead), Graham Connah to John Alexander.

Department of Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology, University of New England, Armidale, N.S.W., Australia. Further to telephone conversation of 9 January, sending copies [not present] of missing material of 31 October 1986. Expresses regret to be out of Qasr Ibrim work; disappointment at E.E.S. attitude; regret that Alexander is not continuing as Director, 'to my mind the only solution'. Will communicate more about 1986 work; no radiocarbon samples received yet. Doubtful that he can be involved in the Sudan committee. Reiterates gratitude to Alexander for the opportunity to be involved in the 1986 work at Qasr Ibrim.

Autograph letter signed, Stanley [surname not given] to John Alexander.

Orpington, Kent. Personal letter from an old school-friend ('the '40-'42 year at Borough Road'). Has been to 50th reunion; comments on reunion; news of friends; family news (mention of a son and daughter who had been at Pembroke). 'Whether priests retire or not I wouldn't know but I'm thankful I have. Do dons?'

Copy typescript letter, Graham E. Connah to John Alexander.

Department of Archaeology and Palaeoanthropology, University of New England, Armidale, N.S.W., Australia. Discusses revisions in his report (sent with letter; also Xerox copy of 1037 plan marked up with corrections [neither present]) sent for inclusion in the interim publication; plans for own publication. Very sorry that Alexander has given up directorship of Qasr Ibrim; discusses his own future involvement; matters of funding. Willing to fly over 'to talk the matter out with those who are to be involved.' E.E.S. [Egypt Exploration Society] needs 'to make its wishes felt rather more clearly than it has yet done.' Has talked to Peter Rowley-Conwy about sending radiocarbon samples. Will send field notes to Alexander; asks in return for copies of Alexander's field notes for 1037 in 1984 and prints of black and white negatives from the 1037 excavation.

Copy typescript letter, John Alexander to 'all British members of the 1984 Ibrim Expedition'.

Qasr Ibrim Expedition (E.E.S.), Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge letterhead. Bill [William] Adams not successful in getting American funds for Ibrim in 1985-6; Graham Connah also has been refused; will have to rely on British money. Effect on expedition plans for this year, possibly no work at Ibrim at all. 'I thought I should let you have the melancholy news as quickly as possible.'

Copy typescript signed letter of 16 September from Dr B. H. [Ben] Farmer to Miss Elisabeth Rowell, London, forwarded to John Alexander.

Acknowledges her letter of 13 September; regrets lack of space for inclusion in the [Geographical] Journal. Together with copy of Rowell's note and query on the possible 'salad earthenware vessel'(including illustration) from excavation of early 18th century wreck at Sharm el Sheik, and compliments slip (the Editor, The Geographical Journal, Royal Geographical Society, London) asking Alexander if he can help.

Correspondence.

Personal file from former CAM ARC office with material relating to archaeology outside of Cambridge.
