Ambrose Copinger was a younger son of Henry Copinger, Lord of the Manor of Buxhall, Suffolk; he was admitted a Fellow of the College 11 April 1565, and was Senior Bursar from 2 February 1575/6 to 21 January 1576/7. He was presented by his father to the Rectory of Buxhall in 1569, but resigned the next year. The Copingers were wealthy landowners and Ambrose was knighted by King James, before his Coronation, on 23 July 1603 in the Royal Garden at Whitehall, when there was a general summons to all persons possessed of £40 a year from lands to accept the honour of knighthood or compound. Between three and four hundred persons were knighted on that day.
